Fashion in the eyes of southamericans

As a final project in the Textile and Fashion design career, we were asked to talk about fashion from a South American perspective.

To start, we begin with a question: What is fashion?

We often ask ourselves this question, but most of the time we do not come up with a sure answer.

Now we change the angle, we want to know what bothers us about fashion and, consequently, what we would change about it.

Therefore, the answer is simple. In a hyper-globalized world, we see that our identity is lost in the eyes of the "others". The fashion system is governed by European tastes, and consequently our region is forgotten.

For this reason, we want fashion to take us back to our roots and remind us of our identity. But this will not be an easy task, because if there is one thing we are sure of, it is that we are “enmarañadas”.

What does this mean?

The Spanish word “enmarañada” comes from “maraña” which means entanglement. For us there´s nothing that represents Argentina more.

Our country is a great mixture of identities; we come from all over the world. We are Italian, Spanish, Bolivian, Paraguayan, Japanese, Chinese, Native American and more.

First garment created at “Maraña”, called “prenda del alma” or “soul garment”. This is meant to be the center of the brand, the inspiration behind every collection.

Made out of cotton, with a piece of handmade knit the garment represents nature.

"Maraña" is entanglement. The entanglement of organic things, like hair or the branches of a tree.

For this reason, as the topic of the first collection we chose the concept of a nursery, but we changed its angle by working it as "fungui-vivero“, meaning a nursery of fungus.

We liked the austere quality of this strange and fascinating living being, as well as the opposition it provoked in us. The fungus is slimy, damp and ugly, but it is also intricate, persevering, and of great beauty.

The order in the chaos.

The life in death".
